Five Woodland men were arrested early Wednesday on felony charges of robbery and participation in a criminal street gang after allegedly assaulting and robbing a victim outside a 7-Eleven store at 301 Cottonwood St.

Officers were summoned to the store just before 1 a.m., and the male victim told them five to six Hispanic men had approached him and asked for money, then attacked him and stole various items. His injuries reportedly were not life-threatening.

Within minutes, officers located two suspects — Christian Roa, 21, and Jose Jimenez-Munoz, 20, both of Woodland — near West Lincoln Avenue. They were taken into custody without incident. Additional responding officers spotted two other suspects — later identified as Justin Gonzalez, 19, and Anthony Ozuna, 21, both of Woodland — on Community Lane between Lincoln and Main Street and took them into custody.

Soon after, officers saw a fifth man peeking out of bushes near Community Lane and West Lincoln Avenue, and arrested Juan Fuentes, 19, of Woodland.

The victim, who is not believed to have any gang association, reported that the suspects stole various items from him and yelled gang slurs during the assault. He positively identified all five suspects as being involved.

All five men were booked into Yolo County Jail on the felony charges, and Fuentes was booked on a misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest.

Anyone with information about this crime or the suspects is asked to call Woodland police at 530-666-2411.

MIAMI (AP) — Forecasters say a tropical depression crossing Mexico’s Bay of Campeche is getting better organized and is expected to become a tropical storm before making landfall along Mexico’s Gulf Coast.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said the Atlantic season’s second tropical depression is drenching areas in its path with up to 10 inches of rain in some places, raising the threat of flash floods.

The depression formed Monday off Belize and was about 115 miles east of Veracruz, Mexico, on Wednesday. It is expected to strengthen before making landfall Thursday morning in Veracruz.

The storm has maximum sustained winds of 35 mph. A tropical storm warning is in effect from Punta El Lagarto to Barra de Nautla.

MARIPOSA (AP) — An unattended campfire near a main route into Yosemite National Park grew into a blaze that led to the evacuations of 1,500 people from 800 homes, but nearly half were allowed to return as firefighters gained ground late Tuesday.

California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection officials released the cause of the fire Tuesday, as 2,200 firefighters – up from more than 700 Monday – worked to gain the upper hand on it amid windy, dry conditions. No other details were available about where the fire started, spokeswoman Karen Guillemin said.

Evacuations orders would be lifted Tuesday night for about 700 people, CalFire officials said.

The fire 6 miles northeast of Mariposa has burned nearly 3 square miles and was 40 percent contained as temperatures dropped.

One firefighter suffered a minor injury, but no structures have been damaged or destroyed, Guillemin said. Crews are clearing brush to create defensive space around homes, laying fire line and dropping retardant from the air.

Firefighters in Colorado were mopping up remaining hot spots from the most destructive wildfire in state history that destroyed 502 homes and charred more than 22 square miles after it broke out Tuesday, June 11. The Black Forest Fire just outside Colorado Springs killed couple Marc Allen Herklotz, 52, and his wife, Robin Lauran Herklotz, 50, who were identified by authorities Tuesday.

The Colorado fire was 85 percent contained Tuesday as hundreds of evacuated residents were allowed back into the burn area, though they were warned that many would return to rubble, not their homes.

Colorado firefighters were also finishing work putting out a wildfire that burned 5 square miles near Canon City in southern Colorado.

A wind-whipped wildfire in northern Arizona on Tuesday rapidly grew to nearly 8 square miles and burned to within 400 yards of some homes. Authorities say hundreds of homes and hundreds of people were evacuated, but exact numbers weren’t immediately available.

They say the fire is human-caused and under investigation. It began shortly before noon Tuesday near the Doce Pit about 8 miles northwest of Prescott.

The fire was burning in scrub brush on Granite Mountain, sending up huge plumes of smoke that were settling in communities around Prescott and carried 70 miles away to Williams.

“It’s a huge concern locally and immediately because it’s active and moving,” said fire spokeswoman Mary Zabinski. “We’re certainly in drought conditions and with this current system moving through the Southwest, it’s wind-driven and fuels-driven because they’re so dry.”

Wildfires have also charred nearly 100 square miles of dry, rugged terrain across New Mexico since the end of May, with the largest fire still raging in the Gila National Forest. Hot, windy weather helped the 39-square-mile Silver Fire grow overnight, and firefighters were concerned since critical fire weather was expected through the rest of the week.

No homes have burned in New Mexico, but land managers in the Gila and Santa Fe National Forests were already bracing Tuesday for the post-fire threats of erosion and flooding from summer rains.

In Mariposa, Calif., state Route 140 into Yosemite National Park remains open. Tourists can see some smoke from the road itself, but it does not affect visitors in the park, said Yosemite National Park spokesman Scott Gediman. The fire is burning about 35 miles west of the park boundary, Gediman said.

“Visitors coming into the park are fine,” he said. “We’re not discouraging visits, just the opposite. If people have plans, there’s absolutely no reason for them not to come.”

Fire officials said fire danger is extreme in California this year, due to an especially dry spring. Already this year, more than 80 square miles have burned across the state. At this time last year, only about 30 square miles had burned. Cal Fire has responded to 2,600 fires so far in 2013, a 75 percent increase from 2012, officials said.

Samantha Weber, who lives in Midpines, a rugged, unincorporated area about 35 miles west of Yosemite, said she knew the fire near Yosemite was headed for her home when she saw charred leaves drifting at her.

“I saw entire leaves that are blackened and blistered just floating through the air,” Weber told the San Francisco Chronicle. “They looked like birds.”

The fire was helped by swirling winds and dry conditions that residents said are severe and arrived surprisingly early this year.

“It is kind of always dry here in the summer,” Weber said. “But it was an especially dry spring, so things are really dry.”

Ed Helms, his wife and three adult children were told to evacuate their home in Hites Cove on Sunday as they celebrated Father’s Day in the backyard.

“We had to leave the steaks we were cooking on the barbecue to pack up and get out,” Helms told the Modesto Bee.

The Red Cross has set up a shelter in Mariposa for evacuees.

An estimated 94 percent of wildfires have human causes, Guillemin said.

“Humans need to stop and think fire prevention before they do anything outdoors, so they can help prevent fires,” she said.

SO MANY QUESTIONS … the arrest of 16-year-old Daniel William Marsh for the savage murders of Chip Northup and Claudia Maupin has brought a measure of relief to our town, but also a whole range of troubling questions … and while murder is murder no matter the perpetrator, most of us had hoped this was one of those random, robbery-gone-wrong crimes committed by someone from out of town who simply hopped back onto the freeway after inflicting this horror, never to be seen again … not that any of that makes any difference to the victims or their loved ones … this crime was horrific, no matter who is responsible …

Still, we didn’t want to believe that someone from our town was capable of such a crime, but if the police and the DA are to be believed — and they say the evidence is “compelling” — these incredibly brutal acts were carried out by one of our own, just 15 at the time … and he apparently has been walking among us for the last two months, presumably capable of murdering again … compounding the senselessness of these murders are those images from four years ago of a 12-year-old Daniel Marsh being honored as a hometown hero by the Red Cross of Yolo County for saving his dad’s life after his father had a heart attack and passed out while driving to the hospital … seeing that seemingly innocent and heroic kid as a murderer is almost unimaginable …

Even worse, in addition to first-degree murder, he has been charged with an enhancement “in that the murders were committed in a way that manifested exceptional depravity” … he’s also charged with enhancements for “lying in wait” and inflicting “torture in the commission of murder” …

Clearly, if he’s guilty of these crimes, something went terribly wrong in his life and in his mind, but we may never know what exactly that was or how it might have been prevented … all we know for sure is that Chip and Claudia are gone and those who knew them miss them dearly …

A WOLK IN THE PARK … exciting to hear that the mayors of both Fairfield and Vacaville have endorsed Dan Wolk’s candidacy for the California Assembly … unfortunately for Dan, neither Fairfield nor Vacaville are in the 4th District, which means the mayors of those two cities will be voting for someone else come Election Day … still, if Dan can get endorsements from Kevin Johnson, Christopher Cabaldon and maybe Fiorello LaGuardia, he’ll be a shoo-in for that Sacramento job …

TURNAROUND IS FAIR PLAY … some folks have been blaming the messenger for the troubles at FamiliesFirst that include more than 500 recent calls to the police, so maybe it’s not surprising that the latest police complaint from FamiliesFirst concerns the press … according to the police log, concerning “Parking Complaint 130614182,” the incident “Occurred at FamiliesFirst on 5th St., Davis. News van parked in front of business in ‘No Parking Zone,’ request they be moved along.” … book ‘em, Danno …

A ONCE A YEAR EVENT … my friend Ann at aol.com writes to say she “was wondering” if I “know when the time/day is that this Water Storage thingy over here on Mace Blvd. is supposed to be aligned and we can read whatever message is supposed to say on the thing?” … that would be the summer solstice, Ann, when the stars and the moon and the sun and Mars and maybe a few cumulonimbus clouds all align to make the letters on the tank read: “No Davis artists were hired to do this project.” … don’t blink or you’ll miss it …
