SAN LUIS OBISPO — Germany’s Jens Voigt won the fifth stage of the Tour of California on Thursday, and American Tejay van Garderen surprisingly took the overall lead a day sooner than expected.

The 41-year-old Voigt, riding for RadioShack Leopard, jumped to the front with about three miles left and completed the windy 115.4-mile Santa Barbara-to-Avila Beach road race in 4 hours, 41 minutes, 11 seconds.

“There was a sticky little uphill with about five kilometers left,” said Voigt, the oldest rider in the field. “I said ‘now or never’ and it worked. It worked once again.”

American Tyler Farrar of Garmin-Sharp was second in 4:41:22, followed by Norway’s Thor Hushovd of BMC in the same time.

Voigt, a two-time Tour de France stage winner who turned professional in 1997, and van Gardener, riding for BMC, were among 18 riders who escaped from the main field in strong coastal crosswinds about 33 miles from the finish.

Van Garderen, who trailed Colombia’s Janier Acevedo of Jamis-Hagens Berman by 12 seconds at the start of the stage, took a 44-second lead over 2010 race winner Michael Rogers of Australia and Saxo-Tinkoff.

Van Garderen, fourth in the event last year and fifth as the leading American finisher in the 2012 Tour de France, is the favorite in the stage-six time trial in San Jose.

OAKLAND (AP) — When everything is rolling for the Oakland Athletics, Brandon Moss’ line drive with two runners on in the sixth inning falls perfectly in the gap for a key hit. On Wednesday, Nelson Cruz ran down the ball and snagged it for a spectacular diving catch.

The reigning AL West champion A’s are in another familiar first-half funk after dropping the series finale to the first-place Texas Rangers, 6-2, Oakland’s eighth loss in 10 games.

The A’s (20-22) fell two games below .500 for the first time since the second day of the season.

Cruz hit a three-run homer in the Rangers’ four-run fifth frame, but he counted his catch to end the sixth with runners on first and second as his highlight of the day.

On the heels of a tough 3-7 road trip through New York, Cleveland and Seattle, the A’s won the series opener with Texas 5-1 on Monday night, then lost in 10 innings Tuesday.

Giants trounced in Toronto again

TORONTO (AP) — J.P. Arencibia and Adam Lind each hit two-run homers, Ramon Ortiz won for the first time since 2011 and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the San Francisco Giants, 11-3, on Wednesday.

The last-place Blue Jays, who came in with the fewest runs of any AL East team, have 33 runs and 41 hits in their past three games. They won the series opener against the Giants, 10-6, on Tuesday.

The NL West-leading Giants allowed double-digit runs in consecutive games for the first time this season.

Pablo Sandoval gave the Giants an early lead with a sacrifice fly off Ortiz in the first, but the Blue Jays answered by batting around in the bottom half, taking advantage of two San Francisco errors to score five runs against right-hander Ryan Vogelsong, who continues to struggle

Vogelsong (1-4) allowed a season-high eight runs, three earned, in two innings, his shortest start of the season. Vogelsong, who has lost three of his past four starts, walked two and struck out one. His ERA rose to 8.06.

Buster Posey hit an RBI double off Storey in the eighth.

The NorCal Extreme Hockey Clubs saw its 12U squad capture a gold medal and the 14U team take home silver from last weekend’s NorCal Cup Finals.

Playing with their usual short but mighty roster of only six 12U skaters, the youngest local squad started the event with a 9-4 win over the Junior Sharks. Despite following up with a pair of losses, the Extreme made the championship contest of the Silver Division, then won that game, 7-2.

For the tournament, Sam Blakewell led NorCal with eight goals, Nick Blakewell tallied five and other scoring came from Jack Shields (two), Thomas Witham (two), Brandon Pacciorini and Cole Skoog. 12U goalie Max Muller saved 83 percent of the shots he saw.

The Extreme’s 14U team bounced back from a tourney-opening 2-0 loss to the Bay Area Elite to dominate the Rampage (6-0) and the Mustangs (8-0) to earn a spot in the Gold Division finals. There, the locals found themselves in a rematch against the Elite that was a back-and-forth affair. Down 3-2 with just 30 seconds left, NorCal pulled its goalie for an extra attacker and the strategy worked as a goal with less than a second left forced overtime. The Elite, however, tallied in the extra period and won 4-3, putting the Extreme in second place.

NorCal’s Miguel Witham and Joe Blakewell each scored five goals on the day, Sam Blakewell added three, Noah Bristow logged two and Max Landy netted one. Pacciorini contributed an assist, while local U14 goalie Nicholas Leacox turned away 45 shots in the tournament and earned top goalie honors.

The Extreme’s 16U squad made the Gold Division playoffs with wins over Elite 96 (2-1) and the Mustangs (5-1) before being bounced from the tournament by the Elite 97. Along the way, Danny Kumata led NorCal with six goals and two assists, Tyler Schafer notched two scores, and single tallies came from Caleb Hermle, Ricky Pacciorini, Ryan Kowta and Joe Blakewell. Leacox again was stellar in the pipes with an 86 percent save rate for the 16Us.

Saxons hockey

Affiliated with the NorCal hockey club but skating as the Saxons, a local 18U team took first place at the recent Pacific Inline Hockey League championships.

After powering past Antioch, 8-3, and Ripon, 5-2, the Saxons dropped a 4-2 match to the Chico Firebirds to complete round-robin play. However, in a rematch against Chico in the tournament’s title contest, the locals defeated the Firebird, 5-2.

On the day, Paul Hermle scored eight Saxon goals, Caleb Hermle tallied five, Brian Varley recorded four and Jacob Muller added two. Local Danny Kumata rounded out the local scoring with his goal, while defenseman Joe Blakewell contributed three assists and goalie Eddie Berlin stopped 86 percent of the shots he faced.

Knights U15 girls lacrosse

The Davis Knights’ U15 girls lacrosse team had to play short-handed in two losses on Saturday, but still managed to nearly top the Diablo Scorpion Venom.

In falling to the Lamorinda Extreme earlier in the day, the locals got strong play from goalie Julianna Diggs (11 saves) and scoring from Darby Maguire, Jeanne Kim, Tess McDaniel, Chloe Nicolet and Hanah Wyman.

Despite losing another player to injury early in its second match, Davis gave Diablo all it could handle in a 9-8 loss.

Maguire was brilliant, scoring four of her six goals in the second half to help the Knights keep pace, while Kim had a pair of tallies in the contest. Playing between the pipes, Diggs had 11 more saves.

Knights U15 boys lacrosse

The Davis Knights’ U15 boys lacrosse team finished it regular season with a 16-1 win over Woodcreek last weekend.

With Benton Harshaw scoring his first goal of the season, the Knights offense also was paced by Rowan Hart’s four goals and seven assists. Davis’ Austin Griffiths controlled the inside on his way to a four-goal performance, matching the output of teammate Aidan Mager, while Sean Gellen (two) and Gabe Beauchamp rounded out the local scoring. Kyle Morse won 7-of-9 face-offs to set up the successful possessions.

On the other end of the field, Davis goalie David Zingaro used speed and vision to make five saves, Liam Condon picked up a team-high seven ground balls and interceptions by Ethan Iacono (four), Paul Buhlman (two) and Enya Fujishima were key.

Knights U11 boys

The Davis Knights’ U11 boys lacrosse team won a pair of games at the NCJLA Tournament on Sunday at Treasure Island.

In their opener, the locals defeated the Menlo Atherton Grizzlies, 10-4, as Tanner McNamara netted three of his four goals in the first period. Other Davis scoring came from Matt Ceppos, Gerad Lichtenhan, Taylor Vaughn, Mason Johnstone, Cameron Duncan and Lucas Griffiths.

The Knights stayed hot in Game 2 and, with the help of their stout defense, topped Ross Valley, 10-3.

McNamara again led the way, scoring another four times, Vaighn added two and Nathan Ceppos, Duncan, Niko Natsoulus and Kevin Halozan had one each.

Newcastle soccer

The Davis Legacy Newcastle, a U10 boys soccer team, defeated the Folsom Marauders, 6-1, on Saturday.

Lennon Weintraub set the tone early with an apparent goal that was called back and the local attack continued when Zach Anderson lofted a header over the keeper to make it 1-0.

Zane Alafranjii assisted on the first goal, then set up Nikita Stukanov on the left side for another tally. With Davis’ Liam Swenson anchoring the center with strong passing, he set up Alafranjii, who bent a beautiful shot over the keeper for the third goal. For the rest of the opening half, Jake Wilkinson’s speedy defense and strong play from Newcastle goalie Pato Guzman kept the Marauders scoreless.

After the break, Alafranjii continued the scoring with a breakaway goal, Jeron Alford powered down the left side to sink a long shot and, after a Folsom tally, J.P. Arendt sent a perfect corner kick to Anderson for the last goal of the game.

For Davis, Aaron Eckey, Sam Leveau and Anderson maintained relentless pressure on top for the reminder of the contest and Weintraub, playing keeper, deflected a late shot to preserve the five-goal margin.
