The mental health advocacy group NAMI-Yolo will rally at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3, for Mental Illness Awareness Week on the steps of the Yolo County Administration Building, 625 Court St. in Woodland.
Yolo County Supervisor Don Saylor will address the rally and present NAMI–Yolo’s awards for outstanding contributions by key individuals to the support of those who suffer from severe mental illness.
The Professional Award will go to Leona Jull, executive director of the Yolo Wayfarer Center; the Volunteer Award will be presented to Al Weiss; and the Consumer Award will go to Brad Anderson.
After the rally, attendees will reconvene in the building atrium for a potluck dinner. The event is an opportunity to meet with those who support the mental health community in this county. You do not need to bring food to join in the potluck, but if you can, bring something depending on your last name: A-H a dessert, I-P a main dish and Q-Z a salad.
At noon Tuesday, Oct. 4, will be a National Day of Prayer meeting for mental illness recovery and understanding. This will take place at the Woodland Christian Church Chapel, 509 College St., on the corner of Lincoln Avenue and College Street. The Rev. Larry Love will conduct the service.
Mental Illness Awareness Week was established by Congress in 1990 in recognition of the National Alliance on Mental Illness and their efforts to raise awareness of mental health issues. Since then, mental health advocates across the country have joined together each year during the first week of October in a celebration of empowerment.
